Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Add the eggs to a small bowl. Lightly beat the eggs.
  • Add the ground beef, ground pork, garlic, onion, bread crumbs, milk, eggs, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings (French onion soup mix) to a large bowl.
  • Mix to combine, but do not overmix, that will make the meatloaf tough.
*If possible, let the mixture sit in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to an hour (or overnight) before shaping.
  • Shape the meat into a loaf and place it in a lightly greased loaf pan.
  • Place the pan on the center rack of the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the pan from the oven and increase the temperature to 400 degrees F.
  • Brush the top of the meatloaf with barbecue sauce, covering as much as possible. You can also use our meatloaf glaze if you prefer.
  • Place the pan back into the oven and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the meatloaf reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.
  • Allow the meatloaf to cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serve it with your favorite sides.

Notes

We used our own homemade French onion soup mix to limit ingredients and preservatives. If using store-bought French onion soup mix, you would add one packet in place of the dry seasonings.
Can I Change Up the Recipe?
Our Lipton French onion soup mix meatloaf calls for a mixture of ground pork and ground beef, but you could use just ground beef or a standard meatloaf blend that includes ground veal. Since the pork has enough fat, you can use lean ground beef if you prefer.
The recipe can also be made using ground turkey or chicken, but you will need to add a little oil or additional milk to compensate for the poultry’s lack of fat.
If you’re not a fan of BBQ sauce, you can use a ketchup-based glaze instead. You can make your own with ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, and some seasonings. Or you can check out my favorite glaze recipe, which is included with our Classic Meatloaf recipe.
Do I have to make it in a loaf pan?
No, you don’t. You can freeform a loaf and place it on a parchment or aluminum foil-lined baking sheet or a baking dish
Can I make this meatloaf ahead of time?
Yes. You can mix and shape the loaf up to a day ahead. Just make sure to keep it tightly wrapped in the refrigerator until ready to bake.
Can I double the recipe?
Absolutely. Shape two loaves and freeze one raw for another time. If you’re only cooking for two, you can make four small loaves and keep the ones you don’t use frozen until needed. They can be frozen raw or baked.
